Mariners By Bob Finnigan
Former major-league infielder Carlos Garcia is thought to be the leading candidate to coach first base for the Mariners in 2005. While there is no firm timetable to have new manager Mike Hargrove's coaching staff in place, the Seattle club is expected to fill the last two vacancies in the next day or two and supposedly was finalizing contract details with Garcia and Jeff Newman, who would be in line to become the Mariners' third-base coach. Garcia, 37, would be getting his first major-league coaching job, working with Mariners infielders as well as coaching first base. Playing most of his 610 big-league games at second base, Garcia was a National League All-Star in 1994 during his seven years with Pittsburgh (1990-96). He later played with Toronto, San Diego and Anaheim. In 2002, he was a player-coach with Buffalo, Cleveland's Class AAA farm team, then switched to full-time coaching with the Bisons the past two seasons.
