ELLENSBURG — Central Washington scored 28 unanswered points in the second half and won its fifth straight game, beating Western Washington 31-17 in the ninth annual Cascade Cup game at Tomlinson Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats (6-4, 4-1) clinched at least a tie for the 2004 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship.

Central Washington trailed by 17-3 shortly into the third quarter, but then the Wildcats found their stride.

Emilio Iniguez scored on a 5-yard run with 7:48 left in the quarter. On Western's next series, CWU defensive end Jacob Galloway recovered a fumble and ran it into the end zone.

On the second play of Western's next series, the Central defense again stepped up. Linebacker Blake Walker tipped WWU quarterback Steve Nichols' pass, and Ryan Andrews intercepted the ball and returned it to the WWU 36. Willie Johnson scampered into the end zone from 3 yards out to give CWU its first lead of the game at 24-17.

Any hopes of a fourth-quarter comeback the Vikings had were crushed early in the period, as Walker forced a fumble on the first play of the quarter, and Johnson scored a 1-yard touchdown on Central's next possession.

Willamette 26, Pacific Lutheran 21

PUYALLUP — Two fourth-quarter scores — Cameron Walton's 4-yard run with 3:29 left in the game and Quentin Brock's 2-yard dash with 53 seconds left — lifted Willamette past Pacific Lutheran University at Sparks Stadium.

The Lutes (5-2, 2-2 Northwest Conference) took a 21-13 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter on Dusty Macauley's 72-yard touchdown pass to Mark McCall.

But Willamette (6-2, 3-0) took over midway through the fourth quarter, driving 80 yards in 10 plays and scoring on Walton's run. After the Lutes punted on their next possession, Willamette took over on its own 19-yard line. Walton completed third-down passes of 42 and 33 yards, the last putting the ball on the PLU 2. Brock scored on the next play.

Whitworth 69, Lewis & Clark 12

SPOKANE — Whitworth ran away early from Lewis & Clark at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

The last time Whitworth scored as many points in a single game was a 70-30 win over Whitman in 1976. The Pirates (6-1, 2-1 NWC) led 55-6 at halftime.

Receiver Jared Thomas caught six passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns and ran three times for 12 yards and another score to lead the Pirates' offense.

Puget Sound 52, Colorado College 10

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Quarterback Andy Carlson ran for 166 yards and passed for 193 more, leading Puget Sound (4-4) past Colorado College.
