ELLENSBURG Central Washington scored 28 unanswered points in the second half and won its fifth straight game, beating Western Washington 31-17 in the ninth annual Cascade Cup game at Tomlinson Stadium. With the win, the Wildcats (6-4, 4-1) clinched at least a tie for the 2004 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship. Central Washington trailed by 17-3 shortly into the third quarter, but then the Wildcats found their stride. Emilio Iniguez scored on a 5-yard run with 7:48 left in the quarter. On Western's next series, CWU defensive end Jacob Galloway recovered a fumble and ran it into the end zone. On the second play of Western's next series, the Central defense again stepped up. Linebacker Blake Walker tipped WWU quarterback Steve Nichols' pass, and Ryan Andrews intercepted the ball and returned it to the WWU 36. Willie Johnson scampered into the end zone from 3 yards out to give CWU its first lead of the game at 24-17. Any hopes of a fourth-quarter comeback the Vikings had were crushed early in the period, as Walker forced a fumble on the first play of the quarter, and Johnson scored a 1-yard touchdown on Central's next possession.
