Ohno finishes second in World Cup event

The Bosideng World Cup II opened in Beijing, China, yesterday with Seattle's Apolo Anton Ohno skating to a silver-medal finish in the men's 1,500 meters.

Ohno finished in 2 minutes, 20.627 seconds, slightly behind World Cup champion Hyun-Soo Ahns of Korea at 2:20.330.

"I'm happy with my consistency through the rounds of racing," Ohno said. "This early in the season, it's a good measure to compare against my competitors."

Volleyball

The top-ranked Washington volleyball (19-0, 11-0 Pac-10) team swept host Oregon 30-27, 30-19 and 30-20. Oregon dips to 9-12 overall and 1-10. Washington is just two matches shy of the school record 21 wins by the 1977 UW squad.

• Seattle Pacific's comeback effort fell short against host Alaska Fairbanks in a 30-26, 30-23, 20-30, 22-30, 15-9 loss. Seattle Pacific is 11-10, 7-6 GNAC.

• Oregon State stopped an eight-match losing streak with a 30-21, 30-27, 30-18 win over Washington State (4-20, 1-10 Pac-10) at Gill Coliseum.

• Western Washington defeated host Alaska Anchorage 30-27, 27-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-10.

• Steve Rupe earned his 100th win as a college coach, directing Whitworth College to a 30-19, 30-26, 30-27 win over visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference match.

• Pacific Lutheran (13-6, 12-1 NWC) rolled to 30-21, 30-26, 30-20 victory over Whitman.

• Eastern Washington extended its winning streak to six games with a 30-27, 30-24, 30-22 win over Idaho State.

• The University of San Diego (15-4, 8-0 West Coast) earned a 30-16, 30-19, 30-15 victory over Gonzaga (4-18, 0-8).

Golf

Washington junior James Lepp shot a 2-under-par 70 during the second round of play at the World Amateur Team Championships in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Lepp's score moved him into 26th place and improved Canada's standing to 12th in the 66-team event. His 36-hole total is 1-under 143

Puyallup native Ryan Moore, a UNLV senior, shot a 5-under 67 to stay atop the individual leaderboard at 12-under 132. Moore owns a four-stroke lead over Switzerland's Nicolas Sulzer.

• UW sophomores Alex Prugh and Erik Olson are among 30 golfers invited to play in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic at the El Paso (Texas) Country Club from Nov. 21-23.

Crew

Several area rowers were honored by USRowing. Former Huskies Mary Whipple and Anna Mickelson were joined by Seattle's Lianne Nelson as winners of the Ernestine Bayer, formerly woman of the year award, which they shared with the rest of the women's eight Olympic silver medalists.

The U.S. Olympic team men's eight was awarded the man of the year award and included UW intern coach Bryan Volpenhein and ex-Husky Matt Deakin.

The awards will be given Dec. 4 in Miami Beach, Fla.

• The Washington State women's swimming team is in second place with 289 points at the Pacific Invitational. The Seattle University women lead the non-Division I competition. The Seattle U. men are in second place.
