FEDERAL WAY — Jeff Webb's go-ahead, 3-yard touchdown run with 6:58 remaining lifted Spanaway Lake past Federal Way 12-9 last night in a South Puget Sound League South Division football game at Federal Way Stadium.

Webb, a senior quarterback, scored both touchdowns for the Sentinels (1-1 overall and league) as they got their first victory.

The Eagles (0-2, 0-2) still had a chance before a third-down pass by quarterback Donny McConnaughy was intercepted by Spanaway Lake's Bobby Burns at the Sentinels' 20-yard line with 1:31 remaining.

"The defense came up big with that one," Spanaway Lake coach John Robak said of the game-saving interception. "There were times I thought we were going to give it away, but the defense stepped it up."

Federal Way led 9-6 after Robbie Borden's 29-yard field goal in the second quarter, but the Eagles couldn't get their offense moving after that.

It was the second game in a row in which the Eagles came close to victory. They had a potential touchdown drive stopped inside the Rogers 5-yard line last week in a 21-13 loss.

"Again, it was close," Federal Way coach John Meagher said. "But we're going to get it turned around soon. Once we get one win, we're going to string a few of them together."

The teams exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter, Spanaway Lake's Webb scoring on a 5-yard run and Federal Way's Lorell Ezell speeding down the sideline on a 72-yard TD run.

Borden's field goal gave the Eagles a 9-6 lead, and it stayed that way until the Sentinels drove 75 yards in eight plays in the fourth quarter for Webb's go-ahead touchdown.
