ISSAQUAH — Issaquah's first football game this season looked a lot like the Eagles' first 12 last year.

Garrin Hammermaster caught two long first-half touchdown passes from Bryan Jones as 10th-ranked Issaquah rolled past Evergreen of White Center 28-6 in a nonleague season opener for both schools last night.

Issaquah, the defending KingCo 3A Conference champion, looked as dominating as last season's team in rolling up a 28-0 lead through three quarters.

Last year, Issaquah went 9-0 in the conference and was 12-0 before losing to Bellevue in the Class 3A state semifinals. The Eagles beat the eventual state-champion Wolverines, their conference rivals, during the regular season.

Last night, Jones was spectacularly efficient as a replacement for quarterback Mark Gray, the KingCo 3A Offensive Player of the Year last season. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior completed 8 of 12 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

Hammermaster caught scoring throws of 43 and 55 yards from Jones. Chris Hamilton had three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Hammermaster and Hamilton are both juniors.

Matt Glenn, a junior safety, intercepted two passes for the Eagles' defense, which held Evergreen to 194 total yards. Jeremy Bakke completed 6 of 9 passes for 111 yards, with a 19-yard TD throw to Andrew Burns in the fourth quarter for the Wolverines.

At Liberty 49, Hazen 21 — Dean Anderson broke touchdown runs of 49, 51 and 75 yards as the Patriots built a 35-7 halftime lead on the way to a nonleague victory over the Highlanders. Anderson, a 5-7, 165-pound senior, finished with 194 yards on only nine carries. Bryce Hockett had three receptions for 67 yards, Craigh Cornelius ran for a pair of TDs and Corey Slater passed for two for Liberty. The Patriots overcame 213 yards on 31 carries by 5-10, 210-pound senior running back Matt Saegesser of Hazen. Anthony Kane had an outstanding game as Liberty's kicker, converting all seven extra-point attempts and averaging 42.5 yards on a pair of punts.

At Newport 27, Burlington-Edison 12 — The Knights capitalized on four Burlington-Edison turnovers and rolled up 369 rushing yards to give coach Mike Miller a nonleague victory in his debut as Newport coach. With Newport protecting a 14-12 lead, Mujale Chisebuk's 23-yard run capped a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that put the Knights ahead 20-12. They later added an insurance score on Brandon Mezistrano's 40-yard run. Chris Stockman and Brock Olesen had second-quarter TD runs for Newport.

At Prosser 46, Mercer Island 14 — Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore passed for 233 yards and three touchdowns as the seventh-ranked Mustangs beat the Islanders in the nonleague season opener for both schools. Prosser led 40-0 at halftime behind the near-perfect passing of Moore, the son of Prosser coach Tom Moore. The Mustangs' QB completed 19 of 22 passes. Each of his scoring throws covered 13 yards to Nick Boydston. The Islanders broke through for third-quarter touchdowns on runs of 27 yards by Morgan Anthony and 77 yards by Chris Taylor. Taylor, a first-year senior quarterback, led Mercer Island rushers with 120 yards on 11 carries.

Sammamish 28, at Sedro-Woolley 7 — The Totems held the Cubs to 32 rushing yards and Laine McCann rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a nonleague season-opening win. J.D. Aylward added 94 yards on 11 carries for Sammamish, which overcame an early 7-0 deficit.
