Tacoma Rainiers

Record: 74-59, second place North Division, Class AAA, Pacific Coast League.

What's up: 2B/OF Luis Ugueto, the former Rule 5 player who was carried the entire season by the Mariners in 2002, has left the team for personal reasons. ... LHP Craig Anderson will bring an Olympic silver medal back to the Rainiers' clubhouse. His Australian team lost to Cuba in the gold-medal game at the Athens Olympics. Anderson had two outings, going 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA. ... Player attrition may have finally taken a toll on Tacoma. With the Mariners bringing up most of the Rainiers' best players, the team has struggled down the stretch. Tacoma lost all four games last week in a big series with the Portland Beavers. Heading into last night's game, they were 2-1/2 games behind the Beavers with a week remaining. ... RHP Gustavo Martinez lost both his starts last week, allowing 13 runs and 20 hits in 10-2/3 innings. ... LHP Randy Williams, the only pitcher who has been with the Rainiers throughout the entire season, earned one of the team's two wins last week. He went 3-2/3 innings in two outings without allowing a run. ... 2B Mickey Lopez struggled with a .192 batting average last week.

San Antonio Missions

Record: 33-28, second place in West Division, Texas League (30-40, third place in first half).

What's up: LHP Phil Devey, who was 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 12 appearances for the Missions before playing for Canada in Athens, has returned. He appeared in one Olympic game and allowed two hits and no runs in six innings. ... The Missions' pitching staff had a combined 1.92 ERA last week, winning five of seven games. Devey won Sunday's 4-0 decision over Wichita, allowing three hits in seven innings. ... RHP Felix Hernandez tossed a shutout Thursday against Wichita. He allowed three hits and struck out seven. He is 4-1 with a 3.44 ERA. ... RHP Aaron Taylor, coming back from offseason shoulder surgery, is 3-1 with a 2.97 ERA in 27 appearances. He might be promoted to the Mariners when rosters are expanded in September. ... OF Shin-soo Choo is fifth in the Texas League in hitting at .308. He also is second in hits (151), second in triples (7) and fourth in stolen bases (35).

What's up: LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith had probably the best numbers among five Mariners farmhands who played in the Athens Olympics. He was 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four appearances for his Australian team. The Aussies finished second. He has rejoined the 66ers, along with OF Wladimir Balentien, who hit .133 (2 of 15) in six games while playing for The Netherlands in Athens. Balentien was at Wisconsin all season — hitting .277 with 15 HR and 46 RBI — but was promoted to Inland for the final couple of weeks. ... LHP Bobby Livingston shut out San Jose on three hits on Saturday. For that, Livingston was named the California League pitcher of the week. Livingston is 12-5 with a 3.32 ERA. ... 3B Jesus Guzman hit .350 for the week and drove in seven runs. ... 2B/SS Michael Garciaparra hit .313 last week. He's now hitting .208. ... OF Carlos Arroyo is fourth in the league in batting at .329. ... OF Gary Harris leads the league with 16 triples.

What's up: The Timber Rattlers are struggling down the stretch. They lost five of six games last week. ... 2B Nick Orlandos is the only player hitting above .300 (.301). ... C Chris Collins and OF Chris Colton hit .087 and .187 last week. ... RH Brian Stitt, who had been the closer most of the season, had two starts last week and lost both. ... LHP Jason Mackintosh pitched a complete-game four-hitter Thursday against West Michigan but lost 2-1. ... Colton is tied for third in the Midwest League with 11 triples. ... SS Adam Jones, the Mariners' first-round draft choice last year, is finishing off a decent first full season. Jones, who turned 19 on Aug. 1, is hitting .258 with 10 home runs and a team-leading 66 RBI. He has made 29 errors in 122 games. He has 114 strikeouts in 476 at-bats. ... LHP Ryan Feierabend, a third-round selection in 2003, is 9-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 25 starts. He's just 19 years old.

Everett had a tough week, losing six of seven and falling out of first place in the West Division. ... Everett's pitching staff had a 3.79 ERA last week, but its hitters struggled with a .204 average. They had a six-game losing streak to start the week. ... OF Casey Craig was hitless in 10 at-bats. ... RHP Cibney Bello earned the only victory, in relief. ... SS Matt Tuiasosopo is hitting .267 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 24 games. He has made just one error. ... OF Brent Johnson is the only player hitting above .300 (.303). ... RHP Phil Cullen, who missed last season with a broken arm, leads the team with a 2.00 ERA. Cullen is a former University of Utah basketball player.
