How Olympians with ties to state of Washington fared yesterday:
Chris Belz, University of Washington grad running for Switzerland, finished 12th in his 5,000-meter qualifying race in 13:29.59. He did not advance to the final. Sue Bird, Seattle Storm, scored three points and had one rebound in 12 minutes for the U.S. women's basketball team in its 102-72 quarterfinal victory over Greece. Next: vs. Russia, semifinals, tomorrow. Sandy Brondello, former Seattle Storm, scored five points and had one steal in Australia's 94-55 quarterfinal victory over New Zealand in women's basketball. Next: vs. Brazil, semifinal, tomorrow.
Kathy Colin, UW grad now living in Hawaii, failed to advance from the K-4 kayak sprint semifinal over 500 meters after her team finished fourth in 1:35.869. Next: K-2, 500 meters, semifinal, today.
Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm, playing for unbeaten Australia, scored a game-high 28 points and had nine rebounds and three steals as the Aussies beat New Zealand. Next: vs. Brazil, semifinal, tomorrow.
Nate Johnson and Jordan Malloch, both of Seattle, finished eighth in the men's 1,000-meter canoe sprint doubles semifinal in 3:46.04 and did not advance. Next: C2, 500 meters, semifinal, today.
Aaron Myette, who pitched for the University of Washington in 1997 and now for Class AAA in the Cincinnati organization, pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowed two hits and struck out one in Canada's 11-2 loss to Japan in the bronze-medal baseball game.
