Olympics
How athletes with ties to the state of Washington fared yesterday: Kathy Colin, University of Washington grad, was part of the women's quartet that qualified in K-4 500 meters kayaking sprint, finishing in 1:36.994. Next: semifinals, tomorrow.
Nate Johnson and Jordan Malloch, both of Seattle, clocked a 3:50.735 in a qualifying race in the C-2 1,000-meter sprint canoe. Next: Qualifying, C-2 500-meter sprint, today; and semifinals, C-2 1,000, tomorrow.
Vladimir Radmanovic, Seattle Sonic now with Serbia-Montenegro, played 24-½ minutes, and had two points and three rebounds in a 67-66 loss to China. China's Yao Ming (27 points, 12 rebounds) helped knock the two-time defending world champion to its worst Olympic basketball finish ever (1-4). Serbia-Montenegro finished sixth and last in Group A. Next: vs. Angola, today, to decide 11th place. Jennie Reed, Kirkland, closed out her Olympic competition, placing 10th in women's sprint cycling. Reed was second in the 9-12 finals behind Victoria Pendleton of Great Britain. Pendleton led from the whistle and easily held on to win the race despite an aggressive charge from Reed. Jenny Topping, former UW player, did not play in the gold-medal softball game for the United States but will get a gold medal. In the tournament, she hit .667, with four hits in six at-bats, including a triple.
