How athletes with ties to the state of Washington fared yesterday:

Sue Bird, Seattle Storm, ended her two-game scoring drought with four points, five assists, two steals and one rebound as the U.S. women's basketball team ended round-robin play with a 5-0 record by beating China 100-62. Next: vs. Greece, quarterfinals, Wednesday.

Matt Deakin, UW grad now living in San Francisco, on men's eight that won gold. He and teammates Pete Cipollone (Ardmore, Pa.), Bryan Volpenhein (Cincinnati), Beau Hoopman (Plymouth, Wis.), Dan Beery (Oaktown, Ind.), Joey Hansen (Bakersfield, Calif.), Chris Ahrens (Milwaukee), Wyatt Allen (Portland, Maine), and Jason Read (Ringoes, N.J.) clocked a 5:42.48.

Gail Devers, Seattle native now living in California, pulled up in women's 100-meter hurdles qualifying heat. Did not finish.

Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm, had 24 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots, an assist and a steal in undefeated Australia's win over Brazil, 84-66, to end round-robin play. Sandy Brondello, also a former Storm player, did not play for Australia. Next: vs. New Zealand, quarterfinals, Wednesday.

Seth Kelsey, Brush Prairie, lost to Ukrainian Dmitriy Karuchenko, 25-14, in epee team fencing. The United States finished sixth overall.

Bernard Lagat, former Washington State All-American running for Kenya, was second in the 1,500-meter semifinal in 3:35.84. Next: Men's 1,500 final, tomorrow.

Anna Mickelson, Bellevue; Lianne Nelson, Seattle; and Mary Whipple, former UW, silver in women's eight, along with crewmates Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Laurel Korholz (La Jolla, Calif.), Alison Cox (Turlock, Calif.), Megan Dirkmaat (San Jose, Calif.), Sam Magee (Simsbury, Conn.), and Kate Johnson (Portland) in 6:19.56 to Romania's 6:17.70.

Aaron Myette, who pitched for UW and the Mariners, came on in relief to strike out three in the ninth inning for Canada as it walloped Australia 11-0 to end round-robin play. Canada finished at 5-2, Australia at 4-3. Next: Canada vs. Cuba, semifinals, tomorrow.

Jennie Reed, Kirkland, was ranked ninth after her qualifying race in the women's sprint cycling event, finishing at 61.95 mph. In the first match race against Canadian Lori-Ann Muenzer, Reed lost (60.6 mph), then in the repechage, she lost to Russian Svetlana Grankovskaya ( 59.925 mph).

Sean Spencer, UW grad playing for Greece, pitched 1-2/3 innings in relief, allowing two hits, one of which was a home run, in Greece's 6-1 loss to Japan. Greece finished Olympic play at 1-6, while Japan led the group at 6-1.
