Moore leads qualifying play at U.S. Amateur
By Seattle Times news services
MAMARONECK, N.Y. Ryan Moore, the 21-year-old golf phenom from Puyallup, added one more laurel to a great year yesterday as the medalist in qualifying play at the U.S. Amateur.
Moore, winner of the NCAA Division I title and U.S. Amateur Public Links crown this summer, shot even-par 70 on the West Course at the Winged Foot Golf Club for a two-round total of 139.
Moore, who will be a senior at UNLV, leads a field of 64 players into match play today. His opponent will be a survivor of a five-berths-for-18-players playoff today. A UNLV teammate, Andres Gonzales of Olympia, is in that playoff. Those 18 finished at 150.
Moore has six wins this spring and summer, including the Western Amateur and the Sahalee Players Championship. Since Oct. 2003, he has played 41 competitive rounds and only two of have been over par. Moore started his round yesterday with three consecutive bogeys but recovered.
"You're going to make some bogeys out there," Moore said. "Sometimes, they'll come three in a row like I did. But I was able to make a few more birdies (four) than I expected to coming in."
Nick Cook (71-69-140) of Shelton, Conn., and Oscar Alvarez (67-73-140) of Colombia were runners-up for medalist.
Among those failing to qualify were Mike Putnam of Tacoma (74-77-151) and Dan Whitaker of Cle Elum (77-81-158).
"It would be awesome to win here, especially since I won the Public Links earlier this year," Moore said. "I don't think anyone has done that. My game is solid, and since October I have been real consistent. On a course like this, that's what you want to do."
Moore made his first national splash by winning the 2002 Public Links title. The 2001 Washington 4A high-school champion made the cut at the 2003 Masters and was a member of last year's Walker Cup team.
