Tour de France
Tom Brady New England Patriots quarterback
"It's impressive. No one has ever won six Tours, never mind six straight. I guess it's kind of like Richard Petty's seven championships, but what makes Lance's deal even more impressive is that he's done it against current competition. Petty's championships were strung out over a number of years, and nowadays the competition is much tougher. I've got to believe that cycling today is a lot more competitive than it was 10 or 15 years ago. Yet there's Lance, winning it for six straight years."
"Lance has overcome the greatest of odds and continues to dominate his sport. It's a tremendous testimony of his skill, desire, will and talent. His brilliance has been unmatched for a stunning six years, which is truly remarkable."
"Lance's achievements should be a part of every athlete's motto 'Don't ever give into yourself when your body begins to tire and doubts you will ever reach the finish line.' Many times in my career, my legs could no longer carry me, but I managed to pull within myself and win the fight."
"I watched Lance win the race and that was a pretty neat deal. If you're into bicycle racing, the Tour de France is the biggest thing for your sport.... You look at golf and you think of Tiger Woods, and basketball you think of Michael Jordan. It's tough to compare other sports with each other and say that this accomplishment or that accomplishment is better than any other. You have to separate each athlete to his profession, but when it comes to racing bicycles, then yes, Lance is one of the greatest athletes in that regard." Copyright © 2004 The Seattle Times Company
