SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Torri Edwards, runner-up in the women's 100 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, has tested positive for a banned stimulant, according to sources familiar with the case.

Edwards tested positive for nikethamide at a meet earlier this season in Europe, the sources said. The testing was done by the international track federation (IAAF).

If confirmed by a second test of her sample, which already may have been performed, the positive could disqualify Edwards from the 2004 Olympics.

Neither Edwards, nor her coach, John Smith, nor her agent, Emanuel Hudson, could be reached for comment.

Tryon 3rd in equestrian final

ALLENTOWN, N.J. — Duval's Amy Tryon finished third in the final mandatory outing to select the equestrian Olympic team.

Tryon had the higher placing on Poggio II, and was 11th on My Beau. The one-day competition, which consisted of dressage, a short cross-country course and show jumping, was won by Kim Severson of Keene, Va.

The Olympic team will be announced tomorrow.

Nathan O'Brien, a 2001 Eastlake High School grad and swimmer at Texas, is on his way to Athens as a member of the Canadian Olympic team. O'Brien, who has dual citizenship, won two events at the Canadian trials last week in Toronto — the 200-meter backstroke and 200 butterfly, but will only compete in the backstroke in the Olympics.

Levi Leipheimer was selected to replace Lance Armstrong on the U.S. Olympic men's road cycling team.
