Sarah Hirst of Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center won her lightweight women's single sculls heat yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. World Rowing Championships Trials for non-Olympic boat classes on Lake Mercer near Princeton, N.J.

The trials run through Saturday, with the winners advancing to the Senior World Rowing Championships, July 27-Aug. 1 in Banyoles, Spain.

Local volleyball teams score at nationals

K.J. Black, an 18-and-under team from the Kent Juniors Volleyball Club, finished first in the Silver division and ninth out of 28 teams in the Open division of the USA National Volleyball Tournament in Houston, June 27-30.

K.J. Black was led by junior national-team members Christal Morrison, a Puyallup High grad who will play this fall at Washington, and Kylie Marshall, who'll be a junior at Emerald Ridge High.

Also, the 17-and-under team from the Puget Sound Volleyball Club, which draws from the Auburn, Federal Way, Fife and Tacoma areas, placed fifth in the National division, 33rd overall.

Notes

• Amateur Duane Diede of Everett shot par on a sudden-death playoff hole to earn a berth in the U.S. Senior Open Championship in a qualifier on the Members Course at Aldarra in Issaquah. The tournament will be held July 26-Aug. 1 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

• The Everett Events Center was ranked second in the world, behind Radio City Music Hall, for venues with a capacity of 5,001-10,000 for Nov. 13, 2003 through May 15, 2004 by Venues Today, one of the industry's leading publications. The ranking for the center, home to the Everett Silvertips, was based on total gross ticket sales and factors such as attendance and number of shows.

• Wyoming backup quarterback Zach Weidenaar may transfer to Columbia Basin College in Pasco to play baseball. Weidenaar, a 48th-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 2003 baseball draft, wants to play a year of junior-college ball, then pursue a major-league baseball contract.

Times staff reporter Matt Peterson and other sources contributed to this report.
