Times baseball reporter Larry Stone ranks top Mariners trades according to overall impact to the franchise and ultimate performance of players traded:

1. Feb. 10, 2000: OF Ken Griffey Jr. to Reds for P Brett Tomko, OF Mike Cameron, SS Antonio Perez and P Jake Meyer. Probably the most painful trade in M's history, but Griffey gave GM Pat Gillick few options.

2. May 25, 1989: P Mark Langston and P Mike Campbell to Expos for P Randy Johnson, P Gene Harris and P Brian Holman. A certain 6-foot-10 left-handed throw-in made this trade a lot more palatable.

3. July 31, 1998: P Randy Johnson to Houston for P Freddy Garcia, SS Carlos Guillen and P John Halama. Fans and players were irate, but the trade looked far better as the years went on.

4. June 27, 2004: P Freddy Garcia, C Ben Davis and cash to White Sox for C Miguel Olivo, OF Jeremy Reed and SS Michael Morse. Prospects' performance will determine how well the Mariners did.

5. July 21, 1988: DH Ken Phelps to Yankees for OF Jay Buhner, P Rich Balabon and P Troy Evers. This is the trade that still burns Yankees fans like George Costanza's father.

6. Dec. 11, 1991: Ps Bill Swift, Dave Burba and Mike Jackson for OF Kevin Mitchell and P Mike Remlinger. Early consensus was that Giants got hosed, but it worked out better for them than the M's.

7. July 31, 1997: C Jason Varitek and P Derek Lowe to Red Sox for P Heathcliff Slocumb. Slocumb helped stabilize a horrible M's bullpen, but at a tremendous price.

8. Dec. 7, 1983: 2B Tony Bernazard to Indians for 2B Jack Perconte and DH/OF Gorman Thomas. Bernazard, acquired in another big M's trade for Julio Cruz, netted Seattle two starters.

9. July 30, 1996: P Jamie Moyer to Boston for OF Darren Bragg. Who knew that this unheralded deal would provide the Mariners their steadiest pitcher for a decade?

10. July 31, 1995: P Ron Villone and OF Marc Newfield to Padres for P Andy Benes and Greg Keagle. This trade announced that M's were going for broke in a successful effort to keep the franchise in Seattle.
