Mariners
If they want to make a run at the playoffs, the Sox had to make this deal, and they outbid the Yankees and the Red Sox for Garcia. It cost a lot they also gave up top prospect Jeremy Reed. But this was about two things, here and now, as it always is with (GM Ken) Williams. It was about letting people know the Sox are serious. Rick Morrissey, Chicago Tribune
"Seattle made out very well in this deal," Williams conceded. No doubt it did. But given their 30-43 record, the Mariners are looking beyond 2004. You can do that when you're the only team in town. The White Sox's focus is squarely on creating the same kind of buzz this October that the Cubs did a year ago. Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune
The heavy price that the White Sox paid for Mariners right-hander Freddy Garcia and catcher Ben Davis makes it vital that they retain Garcia, who is a free agent at the end of the season. Miguel Olivo, an established major-league catcher at 25, is a bigger prize for the Mariners than Dodgers Class AAA catcher Koyie Hill or Yankees AA catcher Dioner Navarro would have been. Ken Rosenthal, The Sporting News
