CHARLOTTE, N.C. - With time running out, Tynesha Lewis took advice from teammates.

After Charlotte's set play broke down, Lewis took the ball to the basket for a driving layup just before the buzzer that gave the Sting a 59-57 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars last night.

"The play wasn't for me," said Lewis, who finished with four points. "Before the play (Dawn Staley) said, 'When in doubt, take it to the basket.' Well, I was in doubt so I went to the basket.

"I didn't know if I could make it all the way to the basket, but it parted like the Red Sea so I had a layup."

Tammy Sutton-Brown had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Charlotte Smith-Taylor added 10 points for the Sting (4-5), which has won two straight after a four-game losing streak.

"Tynesha told me when we were out West, we need a break," Sting coach Trudi Lacey said. "I told her we need to make our breaks. She gave us that break tonight."

LaToya Thomas had 19 points and seven rebounds, including a tying put-back with 9.1 seconds left for the Silver Stars (3-7), who have lost six in a row.

Thomas scored eight of the Stars' final 12 points as they fought back from a 10-point deficit in the second half.

"We're going to stay positive," Thomas said. "I was in a groove at the end and we executed.

"Then (Lewis) made a great shot. We were playing good defense, but she just snuck in there and made the shot."
