Sounders
EDMONTON, Alberta The Seattle Sounders scored early, then held on for a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Aviators yesterday at Commonwealth Stadium. The victory, the Sounders' first on the road this season, earned them a split of their two-game swing through Alberta and pushed their record back to .500 at 3-3-1. Sounders forward Welton, who had come off the bench to score twice in Seattle wins, was in the starting lineup yesterday, a move that paid off in the 16th minute. Midfielder Sean-Michael Callahan chased a deep ball down the right side, then sent the ball across the penalty area just over the head of teammate Roger Levesque. Welton, in behind Levesque, leaned his head into the ball and skipped it inside the right post past Edmonton keeper Jose Louis Campi. Edmonton came close to tying the score in the 31st minute when Chris Lemire had a shot knocked down by Sounders keeper Preston Burpo at the right post. The Aviators' best second-half opportunity was a blast from Lemire from just inside the penalty area that banged off the left post. The ball ricocheted to Fred Akok 6 yards out, but his strike went over the crossbar. The Sounders return to Seahawks Stadium Sunday at 5 p.m. against the Calgary Mustangs.
