Huskies slam Oregon State to stay in second

CORVALLIS, Ore. — A fourth-inning grand slam from right fielder Taylor Johnson proved the difference as the No. 21 Washington baseball team beat Oregon State 8-5 yesterday at Goss Stadium.

The win gave the Huskies (26-14-1, 10-5 Pac-10) a 2-1 series win and left UW alone in second place in the Pac-10, 1½ games behind Stanford. Oregon State (27-14, 7-8) dropped into a tie for fourth.

Running

Simon Wangai led five Kenyans in winning the Spokane Bloomsday Run 12-kilometer race in 34 minutes, 54 seconds. It was the slowest winning time in race history. Bloomsday regular James Koskei, the 2002 winner, placed second in 35:31. Tacoma's Eric Tollefson was ninth (38:06), Jeremy Tolman of Vancouver, Wash., was 11th in 38:25, Michael Friedberg of Pullman was 15th (39:02) and Destry Johnson of Puyallup was 18th (39:23).

Albina Ivanova of Russia won the women's race in 39:21. Lyudmila Vasilyeva of Renton was 14th (42:52) and Gwen Greiner of Seattle was 19th (44:40). About 45,000 took part in the race.

Other baseball

Stanford 17, at Washington State 3 — The Cougars (23-19, 5-10 Pac-10) suffered their first series sweep of the season when they lost in seven innings in the finale of a three-game Pac-10 series to the Cardinal (35-6, 10-2).

The game was called because of a Pac-10 rule concerning a 12-run lead.

At Whitworth 10, Pacific Lutheran 4 — Whitworth scored six runs in the eighth inning to defeat Pacific Lutheran (23-16, 15-9 NWC) in the season finale.

Puget Sound 12, at Whitman 1 — The Loggers (20-17, 14-10 NWC) took the three-game series with the win. Whitman (10-26, 7-17) more than doubled its win total from a year ago.

Santa Clara 11, at Gonzaga 2 — Santa Clara (20-26, 9-12 WCC) ended a five-game winning streak by the Bulldogs (20-23, 12-9).

Softball

An eighth leadoff home run by Sarah Hyatt lifted seventh-ranked Washington (34-12, 8-5 Pac-10) to a 1-0 victory over No. 11 Oregon (35-14, 9-6).

Adrienne Moore, Western Washington's third baseman and a Shorecrest grad, has been picked Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week.

Crew

Seattle Pacific cruised to a second straight women's varsity four championship, while the men's lightweight four required a late surge to win at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Western Washington women's varsity eight won a petite final for the second straight year.

• Bremerton native Dana Kirk, swimming for Stanford, won the 200-meter butterfly at the Grand Challenge Invitational in Los Angeles in a meet-record time of 2:10.77.

• Trinity University blanked Whitman 5-0 in the NCAA Division III men's tennis tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Whitman finished 15-7.This report includes information from college sports information departments.
