Thumbs up

Doug Brocail, Rangers

Brocail pitched in the majors Wednesday for the first time since Sept. 11, 2000. He missed the entire 2001 season because of a torn hamstring, was sidelined in 2002 after elbow surgery, and was out of baseball last year.

Thumbs down

A.J. Pierzynski, Giants

Never the most popular fellow with the Twins, Pierzynski has already irked his Giants teammates, one of whom told the Oakland Tribune, "He's the cancer in here." Pierzynski reportedly played cards when asked to go over opposing hitters.

Ex-Mariner of Week

Brian Falkenborg, Dodgers

The Redmond High School product, who pitched in the Mariners' minor-league system the past three seasons, was activated from the DL (knee injury) and made his first major-league appearance since 1999 against the Mets.

Quote of the week

"Guns are juiced."

Trevor Hoffman, Padres reliever, when asked to explain his faster velocity readings this season.
