Mariners update

Who's hot: RHP Freddy Garcia, scheduled to pitch today, has been the Mariners' most effective starter, even though he hasn't won a game. Garcia is 0-1 with a 2.60 earned-run average after four starts. ... DH Edgar Martinez had a six-game hitting streak snapped yesterday, going 0 for 4 in the Mariners' 9-5 loss at Baltimore. Martinez is 10 for 29 (.345) in his past seven games.

Who's not: RF Ichiro is 3 for 22 in his past five games. He is hitting .258, with just two extra-base hits (both doubles). ... SS Rich Aurilia is hitting .232 and is 7 for 40 (.175) in his past 10 games. ... CF Randy Winn (.211) is 5 for 34 (.147) in his past 11 games.

Against the Tigers: The Mariners were 8-1 last season against Detroit, which stumbled to a 43-119 record. ... 2B Bret Boone feasted on Tigers pitching, hitting .350 with four home runs and 15 runs batted in. ... 1B John Olerud hit .414 last season against the Tigers, Martinez hit .370 and Ichiro hit .368. ... RHP Joel Pineiro, not scheduled to pitch in the series, was 3-0 last year against Detroit. LHP Jamie Moyer and RHP Gil Meche, who will start Sunday, were each 2-0.

Notes: The Mariners called up RHP J.J. Putz from Tacoma yesterday and sent LHP Matt Thornton back to Tacoma. Thornton had been called up Monday but did not appear in a game. Putz pitched to one batter yesterday, getting Javy Lopez to ground into a fielder's choice.

Detroit update

Who's hot: Mike Maroth, who lost 21 games last season, is off to a 3-1 start. He is not scheduled to pitch in the series. ... C Ivan Rodriguez is hitting .361, with 16 runs batted in. ... OF Rondell White is hitting .317, and leads the Tigers with five home runs and 22 RBI. ... SS Carlos Guillen, a former Mariner, is hitting .312, with two home runs and 14 RBI. ... Brandon Inge, who lost the catcher's job when Detroit signed Rodriguez, is hitting .333 with 15 RBI in a utility role.

Who's not: 1B Carlos Peña is hitting .237, although he does have four home runs and 16 RBI. ... RHP Jason Johnson, scheduled to start today, is just 1-4, with a 6.94 earned-run average.

Against the Mariners: The Tigers hit just .213 last season against the Mariners. ... Maroth and Nate Cornejo, who is scheduled to start in the series finale on Sunday, were each 0-2 against Seattle last year. ... OF Bobby Higginson was one of the few Tigers to have any luck against Seattle, hitting .316 with three home runs.

Notes: The Tigers have lost three of their past four, including a 12-3 defeat yesterday to Anaheim. ... Reliever Fernando Rodney had elbow surgery yesterday, and is out for the season. ... Dmitri Young is recovering from a broken right leg suffered in the second game of the season, and he will be out at least another three weeks.
