Rangers update

Who's hot: SS Michael Young, who was 3 for 5 with a home run in the Rangers' 7-2 win over Oakland yesterday, is hitting .400, and is tied with 3B Hank Blalock for the team lead with nine runs batted in. Blalock is hitting .357. ... 2B Alfonso Soriano, acquired in the trade with the Yankees for Alex Rodriguez, is hitting .381. ... DH Brad Fullmer is hitting .353, with eight RBI. ... C Gerald Laird is hitting .360. ... As a team, the Rangers are batting .337, and have averaged more than six runs. ... LHP Kenny Rogers, who will not pitch in the series, is 2-0 with a 4.05 earned-run average after beating Oakland yesterday.

Who's not: RHP Chan Ho Park, who will start tonight against the Mariners' Gil Meche, is 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA after his first two starts. ... LH reliever Ron Mahay has allowed six hits in 2-2/3 innings.

Against the Mariners: Blalock hit .338 with five home runs and 15 RBI last season against Seattle. ... Mariners pitchers kept Soriano in check last season, when he was with the Yankees. Soriano hit just .237 against Seattle pitchers in 2003. ... Fullmer, playing for Anaheim last season, hit .368 against the Mariners. ... Park was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts against the Mariners in 2002, 1-1 with a 5.63 ERA last season. ... The Mariners are glad they won't be seeing Rogers this series — he's 3-1, 2.65 ERA the past three seasons against Seattle.

Notes: 1B Mark Teixeira has missed the past three games with a sore muscle in his side.

Mariners update

Who's hot: RF Ichiro is hitting .310, even after an 0-for-5 game last night in the Mariners' 6-2 win at Anaheim. ... SS Rich Aurilia is the only other Mariners starter better than .300, hitting .314. DH Edgar Martinez is hitting .297, C Dan Wilson .292. ... 2B Bret Boone is hitting .286, and has three of the Mariners' four home runs. ... RH Gil Meche, who starts tonight, allowed just two runs in 6-2/3 innings his first start but lost 2-1 at Oakland last Saturday.

Who's not: The Mariners pitchers, particularly the starters, are off to a rough start. The team earned-run average is 5.95. After two starts, RHP Joel Pineiro is 0-1 with an 11.17 ERA. LHP Jamie Moyer is 0-1, 8.44. ... LF Raul Ibanez is hitting .276 with no home runs and four RBI, two last night.

Against the Rangers: Ichiro is hitting .349 career against the Rangers, with eight home runs and 25 runs batted in. The most home runs he has against any other team is three. ... CF Randy Winn is a .360 hitter against the Rangers during his career, including a .356 mark last season, his first with the Mariners. ... Moyer, scheduled to start tomorrow, is 12-3 career against the Rangers. He was 2-0, with a 3.65 ERA last season.

Notes: RHP J.J. Putz, just recalled from Class AAA Tacoma, was with the Mariners last night. He replaces RHP Rafael Soriano, who was sent to Class A Inland Empire to get work while he comes back from a side injury that limited his appearances this spring.
