Huskies baseball foiled by Beavers

Oregon State starter Jonah Nickerson struck out 10 Washington batters in five innings and left fielder Chris Campos went 3 for 5 with a homer and three runs batted in to lead the Beavers to a 7-4 win over the Huskies baseball team in a nonconference game last night at Husky Ballpark.

Nickerson allowed only one UW run on three hits. The Huskies, who have dropped three of their last four games, fell to 19-11-1 on the season.

Silvertips open on road

The Everett Silvertips will face the defending Western Hockey League champion Kelowna Rockets in the Western Conference finals, with the first game set for Friday. The Silvertips were 2-1-0-1 against the Rockets in the regular season.

The series' first two games will be played in Kelowna, with Games 3 and 4 in Everett on April 20 and 22.

Anna Doubek and Jaime Hesselgesser-Wright hit solo homers for Seattle University (16-10, 9-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) in a 2-1 extra-inning softball victory over host Saint Martin's (6-20, 2-10) in the first of two games. In the nightcap, Seattle U. had 13 hits in a 9-0 win, shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

• Western Washington's Josh Immordino was tied for medalist honors after shooting 7-under-par 137 for the first 36 holes, and the Vikings were in third place heading into the final round of the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational.

• Pacific Lutheran's Erik Jensen was in sixth place in the decathlon after the first day of the NWC multi-events championships. Puget Sound's Greg Cause was 11th. The Loggers' Clare Bemish was fourth in the heptathlon with 2,281 points.

• Four Pacific Lutheran athletes received NWC player-of-the-week honors — Gretchen Ruecker (softball hitting), Jo Sonnett (softball pitching), Luke Roloff (tennis) and Carrie Larsen (track & field).

• Central Washington pitcher Jill McCarthey was named GNAC softball player of the week. Also, outfielder Willie Kahn was named baseball hitter of the week.

• Whitman's Hannah Swee was named NWC tennis player of the week.

• Western Washington sprinter Adam Neff shared GNAC track-and-field-athlete-of-the-week honors.

• Snohomish High center Jon Brockman, playing on the Friends of Hoop AAU squad, was named to the all-tournament team at the Boo Williams Invitational this weekend in Hampton, Va.
