The Mariners have played 21 of their 28 season openers in Seattle. They are 12-9 in those games. (Seattle is 2-5 in season openers on the road).

Mariners season openers played in Seattle:

April 6, 1977: California 7, Mariners 0. Joe Rudi homers, drives in four runs, Frank Tanana blanks Mariners.

April 5, 1978: Mariners 3, Minnesota 2. Craig Reynolds hit a two-run homer, and Glenn Abbott and Enrique Romo make it stand up.

April 4, 1979: Mariners 5, California 4. All the M's runs come on homers by Leon Roberts, Larry Cox and Willie Horton.

April 9, 1980:
Mariners 8, Toronto 6. Rod Craig and Bruce Bochte each have three hits, Mike Parrott is winning pitcher.

April 9, 1981: California 6, Mariners 2. Angels catcher Brian Downing hits a grand slam off Abbott in the first inning.

April 5, 1983: Mariners 5, Yankees 4. A sacrifice fly by Al Cowens drives in Steve Henderson in the seventh for the game-winner.

April 4, 1984: Mariners 3, Toronto 2. Bonus panels! M's win in the 10th inning on a hit by Phil Bradley.

April 9, 1985: Mariners 6, Oakland 3. Bradley, Cowens have three hits each to pace Mariners.

April 8, 1986: Mariners 8, California 4. Jim Presley hits a two-run homer in ninth to tie game, grand slam in 10th to win it.

April 9, 1991: California 3, Mariners 2. Chuck Finley beats Erik Hanson in rare Kingdome pitching duel.

April 6, 1992: Texas 12, Mariners 10. Mariners bullpen gives up nine runs in the eighth inning.

April 6, 1993: Mariners 8, Toronto 1. Ken Griffey Jr. hits a three-run homer, Randy Johnson strikes out 14.

April 27, 1995: Mariners 3, Detroit 0. In strike-delayed opener, three-run shot by Griffey is all the scoring.

March 31, 1996: Mariners 3, White Sox 2. Johnson strikes out 14, M's win in bottom of 12th inning.

April 1, 1997: Mariners 4, Yankees 2. Griffey hits two home runs, Jeff Fassero, Bobby Ayala, Norm Charlton shut down Yankees.

March 31, 1998: Cleveland 10, Mariners 9. Another Griffey homer, but bullpen coughs up four runs in eighth inning.

April 5, 1999: White Sox 8, Mariners 2. Griffey's homer is his sixth in eight openers he played in Seattle.

April 3, 2000: Boston 2, Mariners 0. Pedro Martinez shuts down M's on two hits over seven innings, Derek Lowe gets save.

April 2, 2001: Mariners 5, Oakland 4. M's overcome 4-0 deficit, Ichiro gets two hits in his Mariners debut.

April 1, 2002: White Sox 6, Mariners 5. Mariners' four-run rally in eighth inning isn't enough.

April 6, 2004: Anaheim 10, Mariners 5. New Angels (Bartolo Colon and Vladimir Guerrero) and old (Troy Glaus) lead the way.

Opening Day trivia

Biggest crowd: 57,816 at Kingdome, 1998.

Smallest crowd: 22,588 at Kingdome, 1980.

Home runs: Ken Griffey Jr. hit six home runs in openers played in Seattle. The only other Mariners with more than one are Jim Presley, Russ Davis and Tino Martinez, with two each.

Winning pitchers: The only Mariners pitcher to win more than once on Opening Day in Seattle was Randy Johnson, who won twice. Jamie Moyer is the only Mariners pitcher with more than one loss, picking up his second yesterday.

First batter: In the 1977 opener, second baseman Jerry Remy of the California Angels worked Mariners starter Diego Segui for a walk, stole second and third, then scored the first run at the Kingdome on a double by Don Baylor.
