State athletes of the week

Class 4A

Rodney Stuckey, Kentwood boys basketball: The 6-foot-5 senior guard started the season with two big games for the top-ranked Conquerors. He scored 35 points on 12-of-21 field-goal shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 69-46 victory over Kent-Meridian. His performance included three explosive dunks that quieted the K-M crowd. Stuckey, who has signed a letter of intent to play at Eastern Washington, also collected 29 points and 11 rebounds in a 57-43 victory over Enumclaw.

Mackenzie Flynn, Redmond girls basketball: The 5-foot-7 junior guard scored 20 points and had a school-record 14 assists as the Mustangs, ranked third in the state this week, opened KingCo 4A Conference play with a 70-38 victory over Inglemoor. She also scored 12 points in an 89-27 victory over Kennedy.

Class 3A

Ionica Hanson, West Seattle wrestling: The 140-pound junior followed his championship in the North Mason Takedown tournament with another title in his weight class at a tournament at Chief Sealth. He went 9-0 with seven pins during the week. Hanson was a Metro League champion and state qualifier last season.

Kelly Hughes, Columbia River girls basketball: The senior point guard, who has signed a letter of intent to play for UTEP, scored 22 points as the Vancouver school got a 43-35 victory over Heritage and had 23 points in a 69-34 win over Hudson's Bay.

Class 2A

Evan Mattingly, Vashon wrestling: Mattingly, the defending state champion at 189 pounds, pinned all of his opponents and was named the outstanding wrestler at the Connell Invitational. The Pirates senior is 6-0 with six pins this season.

Valencia Doty, Foster girls basketball: Doty, a freshman, had 13 points, seven steals and six rebounds to help the Bulldogs get their first victory this season, 47-32 over Class 3A Highline. She also had 20 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds in a loss to Darrington. Doty is averaging 17 points, eight steals and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Class 1A

David Pendergraft, Brewster boys basketball: The Gonzaga-bound, 6-foot-6 senior forward had two huge games as the Bears, the defending 1A state champions, knocked off their second Class 4A opponent this season. He had 37 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots in a 73-63 win over 12th-ranked Auburn in the Les Schwab Washington Hoop Challenge at Edmundson Pavilion. Earlier this season, he scored 31 points in an 89-83 overtime victory over Snohomish. Pendergraft made an oral commitment to attend Gonzaga before his sophomore season.

Jamie Scott, Life Christian Academy girls basketball: Scott broke school records with 35 points and eight three-pointers in a 78-23 rout of Class 2A Klahowya, and followed with 26 points and six three-pointers in a 57-50 win at Concrete. She also made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to secure a 34-33 win over 2A Orting. Scott, a junior, shot 58 percent (15 of 26) from three-point range during the week.

Class B

Sean Wallace, Chief Leschi boys basketball: Wallace averaged 35.3 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, seven assists and two blocked shots in three games as the Warriors stayed unbeaten. Wallace, a senior, led them to the championship of the Chief Leschi Tournament with wins over Yakama Tribal (67-44) and Taholah (61-58).

Hanna Hull, Pateros girls basketball: Hull, the Class B state player of the year last season, scored 21 of her 32 points in the fourth quarter as the Nannies (3-1) rallied to beat Mansfield 49-40. On Friday night, the 6-foot senior matched her career low with 11 points in a 60-31 loss to Almira-Coulee Hartline, but surpassed 2,000 career points. Heading into this week, Hull had 2,038 points.

The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
