Sounders make Adam Johansson signing official
Posted by Joshua Mayers
The news was widely reported in Sweden on Tuesday, but now it's official.
Adam Johansson, a 28-year-old defender, has signed a multi-year deal with the Sounders, which according to reports in his native Sweden is for three years. The signing will be official upon the receipt of his P-1 visa and international clearance. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, per MLS and club policy.
Johansson, who has played the last seven years at IFK Goteborg in Sweden's top league, came to Seattle earlier this month to meet with the Sounders and see CenturyLink Field and training facility at Starfire.
"I got a really good feeling," he said in a news release. "It will be a new start for me, a new life. It's going to be a good adventure."
Johansson is expected to be the Sounders' first-choice right back following the departure of three-year starter James Riley. He has played 129 league games for Goteborg and has nine caps with the Swedish national team.
"Adam has been a mainstay at Goteborg for years and we are very happy to add him to our defense," said technical director Chris Henderson in the release. "His leadership and experience are going to be a great complement to the growth of our team.
"Adam is very good tactically and is smart in the way he joins the attack from the back," Henderson added. "We are pleased he is also in the running for the starting right back role for Sweden as they prepare for the Euros."
