Is Cordell Cato your newest Sounder? Sounds like it

Posted by Joshua Mayers

A report from Trinidad and Tobago published Tuesday night states that Cordell Cato, a 19-year-old forward/midfielder from T&T, will sign with Sounders FC. An under-20 national, Cato was on trial in Seattle during the summer.

In a phone conversation with The Seattle Times on Tuesday, Sounders FC technical director Chris Henderson talked about Cato in the context of the team's upcoming combine in Port of Spain.

"Last year we had Cordell Cato come in a train with us and we really liked what we saw," said Henderson as an example of the talent in T&T the Sounders hope to discover in the combine.

According to the report, Cato's contract is a one-year deal with two option years.

"I'm really looking forward to joining the club and I'm very excited to take on this next chapter in my career," Cato was quoted as saying in the report, calling it "the best thing to happen to me in my life so far."

He went on the call the team one with "a lot of ambitions and great facilities."

"I think this can be an excellent opportunity to develop as a player and play a part in (the Sounders') attempts to be victorious in the MLS," he said in the report.

Evans Wise, a former MLS player and Cato's agent, said only some final documents and a physical are in the way of an official announcement.

Seattle general manager Adrian Hanauer replied to my text-message inquiry on the report with one of his own: "He's definitely a player that we like. But nothing official."
