Montero to have wrist surgery, Noonan re-signed three mos.
Posted by Joshua Mayers
There was a handful of news nuggets that came out of Sounders FC training today. I'll try to hit them quickly here:
More after the jump:
DP forward Fredy Montero is having surgery today on his wrist. "It's not something major, but something that needed to be done now because it could develop into something major," coach Sigi Schmid said. There's chance Montero could play Saturday against San Jose, but it will depend on the surgery. If he does miss the game he would almost certainly be available next week against Chicago.
"It's not going to keep him out very long," Schmid said. Montero apparently fell on his wrist in training before the New York game and it had kept bothering him. According to Schmid, a hand specialist said the injury is in a tricky location that doesn't get a lot of blood circulation and it needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later to avoid long-term issues.
A possible replacement for Montero would be forward Mike Fucito, who was listed as "probable" on the most recent injury report as he comes back from the adductor injury. Unfortunately Fucito rolled his ankle at the beginning of training Thursday and went in for treatment before practice was opened.
Be sure to check that out and more when I transcribe all the conversations.According to general manager Adrian Hanauer, veteran forward/midfielder Pat Noonan will be signed to a three-month contract extension. His current deal expires April 1, I believe. As some astute Twitter followers have noticed, that deal takes Noonan up to the summer transfer window where a final decision on his time with Sounders FC will be made. Defender James Riley said he's been cleared to play after sustaining a mild concussion last Thursday before the Houston game. Riley joked they nearly had to handcuff him Friday to keep him from playing. Defender Leo Gonzalez is fine and trained in full today. He took a knock Tuesday to his ankle, if I remember correctly, and had to be helped off the field. Rookie goalkeeper Josh Ford wasn't feeling well so he wasn't at training either. Everyone else on the current roster was accounted for. Hanauer also said season-ticket sales are essentially the same as last year, which was just shy of 32,000. He also discussed the new idea of opening up more seats for San Jose and New York home matches as part of a three-game package with the Manchester United friendly.
