A sexual battery civil lawsuit filed by a University of Oregon soccer player against Eugene-born pro soccer player Nate Jaqua has been settled with no exchange of money, attorneys for both parties said late Tuesday.

U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aiken dismissed Leigh Quinlan's lawsuit -- and a counterclaim by Jaqua -- on Tuesday after presiding over a Monday settlement conference in her Portland chambers.

Quinlan, now of Victoria, B.C., filed a $10 million sexual abuse lawsuit against Jaqua and several major league soccer organizations last June. In her complaint, she alleged that Jaqua "subjected her to a brutal, forcible sexual assault" after both left a bar near the UO campus the night of July 1, 2007.

Quinlan later dropped the soccer organizations from her complaint, but still sought more than $5 million in damages from Jaqua, a former South Eugene High School soccer star now playing for the Seattle Sounders.

Quinlan's attorney, Erin Olsen, and Jaqua's attorney, David Angeli, declined comment beyond identical statements that the suit was resolved "with no exchange of money" and that Quinlan "retains the right to continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement."

No criminal charges have been filed against Jaqua. He is the grandson of the late John Jaqua, a longtime Eugene philanthropist, civic leader and Nike board member.

In court documents filed last fall and in February, the 28-year-old Jaqua denied Quinlan's accusations.

He also filed a counterclaim accusing Quinlan of "falsely and maliciously" accusing him of forcible sexual intercourse in written and spoken comments "to various third parties." Jaqua sought at least $500,000 in damages, plus attorneys' fees.

According to Quinlan's lawsuit, the alleged incident happened about midnight after she and Jaqua met at Rennie's Landing, a campus bar. The suit claimed that the assault took place near Pioneer Cemetery.

Quinlan had said that her distress over the alleged assault caused her to leave the UO after two years with its women's soccer team.

The Register-Guard generally does not publish the names of sex crime victims. However, it is the newspaper's policy in most cases to name the plaintiffs in civil suits alleging a sex crime against an individual who has not been convicted of the alleged sexual abuse.
