Chatting with Sigi Schmid and Adrian Hanauer (Q&A's)
Posted by Joshua Mayers
ADRIAN HANAUER
(On the Hurtado injury) "It's a big loss. Jhon Kennedy has been a solid defender for us, obviously, for a year and a half now, and a great individual on the team. So, we're definitely shattered to lose Jhon and his presence on the team, his one-on-one defense, his quality. But we're deep at center back. Obviously having signed Jeff Parke now will provide some additional cover and quality there. And we'll move on. There are injuries in soccer and sports, so we can't hang our heads and worry about it now. Now we have to go forward and make the best of a bad situation."
(On the roster implications) "He'll just go on the IR, which in our league, just to be clear, provides a roster slot but no cap space. So it's not like we get to replace that salary with a new player. Which leads to the next question, which is probably, 'How does this affect how you look at the roster and the moves you might make?' And the answer to that is we've been continuously looking to improve the roster from the beginning of the season. We'll continue down that path. This doesn't really affect the way we're looking at improving the roster, because again it doesn't provide us with any cap space. So the moves that we were potentially were going to make are probably very similar to the moves we would make now."
(On Wednesday being a chance to find the replacement) "I'm not sure the benefits from that perspective outweigh the negatives of more minutes for more guys heading into clearly a very important game in Colorado. The friendlies, they are good. They're good for some players to get some minutes. But they're not good for the players getting minutes who just came off a big game and are heading into a big game. So it will provide us an opportunity to see some players in real competition, that maybe we haven't this year, but we'll be pretty careful with the players who have a big game coming up in Colorado."
SIGI SCHMID
(On Jhon Kennedy Hurtado's injury . . .) "It's unfortunate. Kennedy has been a great defender. Like I said, I think one v. one he is one of the top couple of defenders in this league. We are certainly going to miss him, but luckily ACL's are things that people fix nowadays and people come back and play full out on them again. So he will be back with us before we know it."
(On recovery process . . .) "We are going to put him on the IR [injured reserve]. There's no need to put him on the season ending. We are going to put him on the IR and we'll see how his recovery goes. Every person is different. Marcelo Balboa played six months to the day of his injury and played a 90-minute game, an international game. Everybody's different, so you can't tell for sure. It's certainly going to be towards the end or in to the playoffs before he would be available."
(On having the replacements available) "Obviously there's Jeff Parke that we've got signed. Patrick Ianni has played back there for us successfully, last year as well. As our midfielders get healthy it allows us to put him back there. So I think we have the options to fill that hole."
(Rest him Wednesday or use Wednesday at a test) "Wednesday is going to be a mix for us a little bit. There's going to be some guys that are going to play 90 minutes, who haven't been getting games. There's going to be some guys that probably won't play at all. There's going to be a group of guys that play 45-45. It's a little bit different. The Galaxy played Boca, but it was different for them because they don't have a game until the week ends. Our's is different because it comes in the middle of the week and we have a game on the weekend. Every situation is different is going to be unique."
(On last Saturday's match against San Jose Earthquakes . . .) "It's just the frustration of creating the amount of chances that we did and not being able to finish. Zakuani has finished his breakaways this year and he got stood up on the one by [Joe] Cannon. Nyassi pulled his wide, those were good opportunities, and the one where Montero almost puts the ball in for Kennedy's header. Their goal's offside, that's frustrating. The Montano shot from in close that goes over, that's a good, quality chance. The one Riley tops the ball. It could have been 3-1 at halftime. It's frustrating when you don't put those chances away."
(On Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Evans . . .) "I think they are getting closer. Alonso we got to see how he looks in the game on Wednesday. Forty-five minutes or training is roughly the same so we will take a look at him. Evans was able to go through things today as a neutral player. Whether he is able to play Wednesday I'm not sure. But we will see how that whole thing develops."
