Seattle 2, Union 0 -- Postgame thoughts and player ratings

Posted by Joshua Mayers

Sounders FC players and coaches after the game kept saying this wasn't the team's best effort. Sigi Schmid said his squad could've done better. Brad Evans and Roger Levesque agreed. Check out the team quotes to read it for yourself.

Talk about high expectations, eh?

I thought the team looked really good. Seattle could've scored three goals in the first half, but did very well to put away two. Then the approach became more workmanlike in the second half, which I was OK with.

Why take too many chances with a two-goal lead and a man advantage, right? Having said that, I still think the home team had the better of the chances in the second half despite protecting the lead.

The left side of the Sounders FC attack was especially dangerous Thursday. The trio of Freddie Ljungberg, Fredy Montero and Steve Zakuani were my co-players of the game. They tore the Union defense to pieces at times.

Let's get to the ratings:

STARTERS
Kasey Keller -- Made the saves he needed to and organized the defense well in the shutout. 6
Leo Gonzalez -- Got ahead well at times to help the attack. Was also never in trouble in the back. 6
Tyrone Marshall -- The more steady of the centerbacks I thought tonight. Very solid. No mistakes. 7.5
Jhon K. Hurtado -- Strong in the back as always. Won the ball well. Troubled at times with Seba. 6.5
Zach Scott -- I thought he showed well. Looked a little shaky at times, but dominated in the air. 6
Steve Zakuani -- Extremely dangerous on the left wing. Should have had at least two assists. 8
Osvaldo Alonso -- Relentless in his ball winning. Kept Philly's attack from getting much going. 7
Brad Evans -- Great run and finish to get the party started. A very important goal, I thought. 7.5
Roger Levesque -- Great night for the team, but he could've done better. Missed a scoring chance. 5
Freddie Ljungberg -- Behind the scenes in almost all of the team's dangerous moments. Standout night. 8
Fredy Montero -- A tremendous effort-goal and also a assist. Very active and tracked back at times. 8

SUBS
Sanna Nyassi -- I thought he came on and made a nice impact. Strong showing from the youngster. 6.5
Michael Fucito -- Noticeable and active. Like Nyassi, had a chance to put on away. Only played 14 minutes. INC

COACH
Sigi Schmid -- The quick-passing work emphasized this preseason set up the first goal. Scott looked solid at right back. The subs showed well. Got the three points. 8
