Now what? News from around the league
Posted by Jose Romero
Lots happening around the league today. Robbie Russell, the guy who won the MLS Cup for Real Salt Lake, is unprotected for the expansion draft.
"It would be nice to have some control of the situation, but right now I have no say in it," Russell told the Deseret News yesterday. "It's a little awkward, but it's just the way it is."
A nice crowd turned out to welcome the champs home to Utah yesterday.
Veteran midfielder Ben Olsen has retired from D.C. United after 12 MLS seasons. He also had 37 caps for the USMNT.
The Los Angeles Times reports that David Beckham has asthma. In other news, I am reporting that I do, too.
The Vancouver Sun from our fine neighbors to the north in a city every bit as beautiful as this one printed an article celebrating Seattle as MLS Cup host city, and this passage was in the story.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber said the celebration of soccer was nothing short of spectacular and those images in Seattle definitely will be used to influence FIFA when the U.S. bids to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
Also this bit of info, which I found interesting:
The province (B.C.) has since confirmed the $458-million retractable-roof project will proceed, so the Whitecaps will likely promote the next phase of ticket sales around the time of the 2010 World Cup next summer.
Lenarduzzi (Bob, Whitecaps president) said BC Place Stadium operator PavCo has indicated the July 2011 reopening date for BC Place is a worst-case scenario and it will try to finish the project sooner. MLS play begins in March, so the new Vancouver franchise will likely play in a temporary stadium for the first few months of its inaugural season.
And Denis Hamlett was let go as coach of the Chicago Fire today, ChicagoBreakingSports.com writes. Wow. The Fire had a good season, too.
