Taking the weekend to relax -- and more Kasey Keller
Posted by Jose Romero
Long season right? Almost eight months? So as of this post I'll be taking the weekend off, back with some MLS Cup advance stuff come Monday.
Going to get me a little warmth and sunshine in Arizona. Would MLS work in Phoenix? What do you think?
But before I shut off the computer, wanted to share with you a little more from Kasey Keller yesterday.
Q: How do you guys follow up this year?
Keller: By winning it next year. That's kind of cliche but we had a great year. But at the same time teams have great years all the time. There's a standard that we want to set as a club. We want to continue to have the best fan support as a club. I don't see any reason why that's going to stop. We want to even grow that."
"We want to make sure that we become, for lack of a better word, the New York Yankees of MLS. We want to make sure that we are that powerhouse...if we don't win it, then questions are going to be asked."
Offseason plan:
"I'll take a little break and then start training as always. I'll probably do a lot more, I have some good friends who put me on a program to get ready for last year when I had a significant break before the season started. I've gone through the routine so many times that I kind of know what I need to do and how to get going."
How he's feeling physically:
(After saying he needs to get his foot right) "I feel very happy with the way my body responded all season and I'm going to be hitting that 40 milestone pretty quickly but I feel great to be ready for next year."
Who he picks for MLS Cup:
"I think most of us would like to see Houston win it, because that would make us look great, but this league it's all about who can perform on the day and who can do something special. There's a lot of parity in these last couple of teams."
(My question to him) In the offseason do you start thinking about or talking about a contract extension?
"I don't know yet. We're kind of trying to figure that out. I've said publicly that I would love to be a part of the team for 2011 when Portland and Vancouver become and if my body is willing. Right now I see no reason why not if everything feels great and then I can continue to play. If (Pat) Onstad can continue to play I don't see any reason why I can't. So I'm very happy to look at that. I'm sure Adrian and I will discuss it and we'll find the right time to have those discussions."
Keller went on to answer a question about Sounders FC's Latino players, in Spanish, going over each one and complimenting them for good seasons. I think he also said that each has a bright future either here in this league or in another.
He said he felt very comfortable with Hurtado and Gonzalez on defense, and added that
"it's very nice to come into training and know every day that you've got a good group of guys to train with. That sometimes doesn't happen." He compared it to the Mariners keeping Ken Griffey Jr. after he made the clubhouse a better place.
"When you start chopping and changing [the roster] you never know what kind of elements are going to come into your team and what that's going to do. We have a very good squad and I would be very surprised if there were big changes."
