Game thread, Leg 1 of SEA-HOU playoffs
Posted by Jose Romero
7:26 p.m. kickoff. Looks cool with the fans in the upper deck, even if it's only a few of them.
3 - Corner for Houston, wow that was close, the knockdown header by Hainault almost went in but it was wide.
4 -- Evans nice through ball to Zakuani who gets ahead of the defense, shot is saved by Onstad. Corner kick for SEA.
6 - Davis with the long free kick, it's volleyed in the air but Keller makes save.
Houston's D is really marking tight at midfield.
9 -- Holden cross to Davis for the attempt and its wide. Houston has attacked more early.
11 -- Ljungberg corner kick for Jaqua, header is wide left.
13- Evans on a run centers to Ljungberg but he gives it up.
14 -- There was a HUGE chance there...Ianni with the header off the corner kick and Houston's Mullan is somehow there on the goal line to clear it.
16 -- We've got a brawl down on the field, as Onstad bumps Montero after a scrum in front of the goal and Montero falls down hard. Now, it didn't look like on replay that Onstad used his hands, but rather his shoulder or chest, but it didn't look like Montero did anything, and a yellow card is given to both players. Onstad has now drawn the wrath of the fans, and we have us a rivalry. If anything, Montero should not have been carded. The officiating was suspect there.
23 ---Davis corner cleared by Alonso.
Back to this brawl....the only way Montero got a card was because the official ruled that he flopped hard, as I see it. Players from both teams were pusing and shoving and I'm surprised it got under control fairly quickly.
24 -- Now a hard tackle by Ching on Leo, and no card, but Ching gets a talking-to.
26 - After a hard tackle and no call by Hurtado, Ching with the hard header and Keller dives for the save.
27 - Now another discussion, and Ricardo Clark just kicked Jaqua in the temple and it drew blood. Unintentional, but Jaqua, who was cut in the Open Cup game against Houston, has it happen again and he just ran off the field for treatment. Poor Nate. Twice, same team.
30 -- Jaqua is back on the field now after getting treatment for his cut. He has a bandage over his left eye.
33 -- Riley nice cross to Evans who can't get high enough for the redirect with his head.
Can't say for certain what Marshall's status is. I can't tell if he's on the bench.
41 -- Ianni kicks it over end line trying to get it to Riley, Houston corner kick cleared.
43 -- The free kick to Ianni with the header, OFF the CROSSBAR. It was over Onstad but just high.
2 min stoppage time
Halftime.
Alonso was down on the field but got up, looks like he took an elbow to his face. Osvaldo has been fearless in mixing it up with the bigger Dynamo.
SECOND HALF
48 - Ching gets a header in front that goes wide after a Seattle chance at the other end.
KING 5 will carry the second leg from Houston starting at 11:30 our time on Nov. 8.
Near chance in front for Montero is from Jaqua, wide.
Jerry Brewer is writing his column feverishly to my left. Steve Kelley is watching the game intently.
Subs from both teams warming up in the end zones.
Jaqua now has a full wrap around his head and has changed jerseys to one without a number.
58 -- Keller blocks shot by Davis after Ianni blocks one in front. Corner for HOU.
59 -- A Dynamo guy just knocked the ball out of Keller's hands as he set up to throw it, no call. Montero got a yellow for doing that against New England earlier this season.
61 -- Jaqua with a pass to Montero who spins through two defenders in the middle and shoots while falling down....just wide left. Close.
64 -- Montero, who dealt with flu-like symptoms this week, is out. LEVESQUE is in and the crowd goes nuts. Now a yellow to Alonso for a tackle on Oduro and Schmid is going ballistic.
65 -- Keller punches the corner out of the air then leaps up to catch the ball.
ATTENDANCE: 35,807. Largest crowd in MLS history for a conf. semifinal. 7th largest crowd all-time for any MLS playoff game incl. MLS Cup. Good job, Seattle.
68 -- Yellow card to Brad Evans.
Streamer on the field in NW corner.
71 -- Yellow on Mullan.
74 -- Jaqua header on point batted up in the air by Onstad and saved.
75 -- Chabala grabs Ljungberg to impede him and gets a yellow.
78 -- Play was stopped for some reason and Sounders FC was all over the official, in the meantime, Jaqua scored but the ball was brought back.
79 -- Ljungberg with a run centers to Levesque who can't shoot it. Sounders FC has cranked it up.
Landin in for Oduro for Houston.
82 - Le Toux in, Zakuani out.
]Ljungberg goes down hard in 90th minute, no call. 4 min. of stoppage time.
90-plus -- Two corner opportunities for Seattle result in nothing, but Levesque is close with header.
AND THAT'S THe FINAL WHISTLE> 0-0 after Leg One, on to Houston.
