Sounders FC-KC game thread; Wizards out of playoff contention
Posted by Jose Romero
KC was rooting for Chicago to beat New England. Didn't happen, so it's bye-bye Wizards from playoff chase. WIll it have an impact tonight? We will see.
Starting lineup for Seattle, wearing rave green:
Keller
Evans for Riley at RB. I had a feeling he might not be ready to go, or at least start. Hurtado, Marshall, Gonzalez.
Jaqua at RM, Vagenas, Alonso, Zakuani.
AM: Ljungberg
Montero
Wizards: Forward Josh Wolff, Davy Arnaud, Jack Jewsbury and Claudio Lopez are players to watch.
And here we go, 5:38 p.m. here.
Wow the field looks small.
-Kevin Hartman is a GK who likes to take chances out of the box. The pink jersey is a bit too subtle though.
-I think I see James Riley warming up in the bullpen. In a one-game series, you have to go with your best pitchers. 1-0 Yankees lead Angels right now BTW.
6th -Montero with a great opportunity but the header isn't strong enough. Hartman was out of position. That should have been a goal.
8th - Has Keller ever worn that baby blue jersey? Trying to recall...probably.
-DC United leading Columbus 1-0 in 37th minute at last check..
-FC Dallas winning too, 1-0, so those results aren't going Seattle's way but of course it's all pointless with a win.
BREAKING NEWS off Twitter: Paul Mariner, asst. coach for the Revolution and once rumored to be a candidate for Sounders FC coach, has resigned from his post to take a job abroad - Associated Press.
OK, let's crank it up a notch here somebody....
23 -- Nice tight defense on Wolff there by Marshall after the good cross in front.
24 -- Alonso just saved a goal by being back along the goal line after the corner.
- I like the patch of grass over second base.
27 -- Ljungberg from the corner, deflected by KC defender off the post to Marshall who puts in the rebound. It's 1-0 Sounders FC.
29 -- C. Lopez has a clear shot, just wide right, KC wanted a penalty on Evans there and Lopez blew it. Calabro just said Seattle is 9-1-3 when scoring first.
31 -- Zakuani with a chip shot over Hartman with a wide open net, it's off the bar. Marshall's second goal of the season.
34 -- Jaqua what a header again off the bar. Oh man, Sounders FC could be up 3-0 easily.
-Ljungberg is really setting the tone, as usual.
45 -- Pete Vagenas just got a yellow after Ljungberg goes down. Hard tackle by Pete, but he looks like he was just getting payback for his teammate being hit hard.
HALF in KC. DC and FC Dallas leading their games 1-0. Fomer UW Husky George John has the goal for FCD. Will the Hoops be coming to Seattle figthing for their playoff lives?
SECOND HALF: 45 minutes or so to the playoffs.
Leathers was apparently being worn out by Zakuani so Chance Myers is in at defender for him for the Wizards.
48 -- Montero with the hard push and foul committed....Montero wide open and has it, NO! His left footer is missed wide, a grand opportunity missed there. If this game ends in a draw, Seattle will be kicking itself repeatedly.
GOAL Wizards 51st min. Sounders FC just let ball go through thinking that Keller was going to stop it, and Zoltan finishes. 1-1.
53 -- Myers with a shot right on goal, Keller with the big save.
54 -- Arnaud to Wolff, Marshall fans on it and Evans and Hurtado out of position. GOAL. It's 2-1 Wizards and everything, for now, has fallen apart.
56 -- Montero again right in front with nothing but the GK in front of him, SHOT WIDE. Again.
58 --Did anyone else think Fredy should not have shot that one there?
-DC United wins so even in the event of a draw in KC, Sounders FC cannot clinch tonight.
66 -- Keller stops shot by Wolff.
68 -- At this point, maybe even a draw is OK just to get a point. Another save by Keller and defensively, Seattle has fallen asleep.
69 -- I didn't even see Levesque come in for Montero, but Roger is there on the back post to knock in Ljungberg's corner, GOAL. 2-2. Levesque is something else, man, has he had some big goals.
Kei Kamara now in for KC. Look at that hairdo (70th min.)
FC Dallas is now up 2-0 in second half so Sounders FC must win tonight to clinch.
73 -- What shot by Zakuani, it was curving and just went wide right of the goal.
75 -- Zakuani has Montero disease. Wide open one-on-one and it's stopped by Hartman. What a game!
76 -- Ljungberg to Jaqua, terrible defense by KC and Nate scores! Wow can he get that monkey and some of the fans off his back any faster? It's 3-2 and now this is a streetfight.
Dios mio! This game is crazy. I mean, what a schizophrenic performance by Sounders FC but they are so close now...Keller deserves a ton of credit.
James Riley has come on, Vagenas is out. Now in the 82nd minute, Le Toux in, Zakuani out.
85 -- Zusi from Kamara, the shot is over Keller and the goal.
-3 is the most goals Sounders FC has had in a match this regular season. It had 4 in an Open Cup match at Starfire. Of course, Seattle could have 5 or more in this game...
A nice group of Seattle fans on that berm behind Keller. Another save Keller in 89th minute, man that was big.
What a night for Sounders FC on corner kicks. Now stoppage time is up. 3 minutes.
High drama....history is within this team's grasp.
THAT's IT. Sounders FC 3, Kansas City 2. Seattle, in its first season in Major League Soccer, is in the playoffs. Looks pretty subdued on TV. Fans going crazy.
You saw it, and if you didn't, here it is...playoff tickets go on sale to the general public Oct. 24. Please check back on the blog for more details as I get them.
