Sounders FC training game No. 2: The starters

Posted by Jose Romero

Seattle's opponent for this game featured some members of the Portland Timbers' senior roster plus some Timbers' U-23s and some names from around these parts. Portland head coach Gavin Wilkinson was there, and it seems the Timbers are still smarting from their upset loss in the USL-1 playoffs to Vancouver on aggreggate score.

The "Timbers" wore white. Seattle's starting lineup for the 60-minute game was Terry Boss in goal, RB Riley, CBs Marshall and Hurtado, LB Wahl (in place of absent Gonzalez); RM Jaqua, CMs Evans and Vagenas (for Alonso, who was not at practice), LM Zakuani; FWDs Ljungberg and Montero.

Kasey Keller worked out earlier in the day and didn't play.

Ljungberg scored in the third minute - I caught it on video and will share in the next post.

Alex Chursky, a local player with the Seattle Wolves who suited up for the Timbers, tied the score in the first half. The "Timbers" featured Portland senior players Rodrigo Lopez, Jason McLaughlin, Ivan Becerra and Keith Savage. Also guys you might know who have played here: Adam West, Nik Besagno, Greg Howes and Noah Merl.

Boss made a great save on Chursky in the second half, and Jaqua put in a goal to give Sounders FC a 2-1 lead that stood. Levesque and Neagle came on as second-half subs.

This didn't look too safe at all, but every one of these guys made it back to the locker room safely I think.

Kevin Forrest (right), a former Sounders FC player who scored a game-winner against Colorado in the U.S. Open Cup play-in round before being waived and signing on with the Timbers for the rest of the season, was at Starfire today. Forrest is nursing an injury and couldn't play for Portland, and is now out of contract with the Timbers' season over. But there is a good story in this - Forrest received his medal for the team winning the Open Cup and will be voted a share of the prize money since he had a part in helping the team win it.

I like what Jaqua does in the midfield going forward. He's had some excellent passes in that area of the field. We'll see about his...  Posted on October 10, 2009 at 12:53 AM by anotherone. Jump to comment
Jaqua as right midfield? Great, the "experiment" continues. Is this because they hate the idea of their third highest paid player...  Posted on October 9, 2009 at 4:37 PM by Soundersfan125. Jump to comment
