Clarifying the goalkeeper possession rule
Posted by Jose Romero
Thanks to reader Tim Hinthorn for sending along this link. Scroll down and see how it is explained.
I asked Sigi Schmid about Fredy Montero being unclear as to why he received the yellow for the infraction. Interesting response.
"We didn't talk about that," Schmid said. "The way the rules are interpreted is, if a goalkeeper has his pinky finger on the ball, they say he's got possession. So, it's so pro-keeper, especially moreso in the States than in other countries. In England you can still get an occasional challenge in on keepers. Here keepers can punch your ears out, but if you touch them a little bit, it's usually a foul."
"I think [Matt] Reis baited him a little bit," Schmid said, referring to the Revs' keeper. "It's ironic because last year the same thing happened to us in Columbus where Frankie Hedjuk also headed the ball out of his hand and got his second yellow and got thrown out in that game."
