Sounders FC practice, June 9, 2009
Posted by Jose Romero
Getting ready to make the trek west to Bremerton for the US Open Cup match between Portland Timbers and Kitsap Pumas SC.
The winner moves closer to a shot at Sounders FC in the third round. Kitsap and Portland are two of four teams that will get a crack at the MLS club.
Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid had a point to get across to his players today at the end of practice, and he was very animated in making it.
"What we talked about at the end was that scoring goals is an attitude...it's all about an attitude in the box. It's about an attitude that I want to get to that ball ahead of you. That means I gotta fight, I gotta scratch, I gotta crawl..."
Schmid used a play from last Saturday's game as an example, when Chivas USA defender Mariano Trujillo body-checked a Seattle player to get to the ball first.
"Referees don't call that, so we have to be a little more physical in the box."
Schmid said he'd like to see his players be a bit more demanding of each other, but that team chemistry is good.
In other team news, MID Pete Vagenas was examined by team doctors, who found nothing seriously wrong with his bum right ankle that caused him to miss last Saturday's game. Schmid said the years of playing are probably affecting Vagenas.
"He just has to work through that," Schmid said.
As for Osvaldo Alonso, the team could have pushed him harder in practice today, a good sign, but chose not to, and Alonso looked OK on his strained quadriceps. It seems to be a day-to-day thing with him.
Today is team photo day for Sounders FC at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.
