VANCOUVER, B.C. — The United States scored three goals in the first seven minutes Friday night in a record-setting 14-0 rout of the Dominican Republic in the Americans' opening match of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for this year's Olympic Games in London — a victory tempered by a serious right-knee injury to defender Ali Krieger.

Amy Rodriguez tied a U.S. record with five goals in a game, all in the second half after she came on as a substitute. The 14 goals are the most the Americans have scored in a match in their 27-year history, surpassing the previous record of 12.

Abby Wambach scored 37 seconds into the match, the first of two goals before she left at halftime, her sore knees feeling the impact of the artificial surface at indoor BC Place.

Heather O'Reilly had a hat trick for the Americans, who improved to 32-1-1 all time in qualifying for World Cups and Olympics.

U.S. players other than Rodriguez with five goals in a match are Wambach, Brandi Chastain, Michelle Akers and Tiffeny Milbrett.

U.S. keeper Hope Solo, a former Washington Huskies standout from Richland, didn't have to make a save.

The U.S. women are ranked No. 1 in the world; the Dominicans are ranked 88th.

In such a mismatch, U.S. coach Pia Sundhage's foremost concern was escaping without an injury. But Krieger, a 27-year-old right back who started every match in last year's World Cup, went down after a hard tackle late in the first half.

Krieger was taken off on a stretcher and was replaced by Heather Mitts. A U.S. team spokesman said the injury was "serious" and would be re-evaluated.

The Americans have a group match against Guatemala on Sunday. Mexico beat Guatemala 5-0 in a group opener for both teams.

Note

• U.S. Soccer named Wambach its 2011 female athlete of the year and Clint Dempsey its male athlete of the year.
