BAINBRIDGE — Senior forward Alex Raquer scored just five minutes into the game, and Bainbridge made it stand up Friday night for a 1-0 Class 3A quarterfinal victory over Mount Vernon, giving the Spartans their first trip to the state boys soccer semifinals.
In 12 previous trips to state, Bainbridge had only once escaped the first round, in 1997.
Ninth-ranked Bainbridge (16-3-1), the Metro League tournament champion, will face top-ranked Glacier Peak in the semifinals next Friday at 2 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
Glacier Peak, the defending state champ, held off eighth-ranked Lakeside 3-2 in another quarterfinal game Friday night.
Bainbridge and unranked Mount Vernon (14-2-5) were both coming off big offensive explosions in the first round of the playoffs. Mount Vernon, making its first state-tournament appearance in 20 years, hammered Bremerton 8-1 and Bainbridge smothered Decatur 7-0 on Tuesday.
But defense ruled the night as the Spartans advanced. They didn't allow a goal to a Bulldogs team that came in averaging 4.6 goals per match.
Class 2A quarterfinal
Hockinson 3, Archbishop Murphy 2
At Goddard Stadium, Archbishop Murphy fell behind 3-0 in the first 33 minutes before rallying with two second-half goals in a season-ending defeat.
Hockinson, from suburban Vancouver, scored in the 15th, 21st and 33rd minutes.
Archbishop Murphy (17-3-0) got one back in the 53rd minute when Alexis Magana scored. Eleven minutes later, Magana assisted on a goal by Christian Thode.
But the Wildcats couldn't get the equalizer.
In the semifinals, Hockinson will play North Thurston (Lacey) or Fife at 8 p.m. on May 27 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. North Thurston plays Fife in the quarterfinals at Franklin Pierce High School at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Archbishop Murphy won its first-round match with a 3-2 shootout victory over North Kitsap. Hockinson beat Evergreen of White Center 2-0 in its playoff opener.
