Don Garber, commissioner of Major League Soccer, answered questions from readers in an exclusive live chat Thursday. For the complete chat and all eight of The Seattle Times online chats with local Sports newsmakers, go to seattletimes.com/sports.
Q: Many people ... believe MLS needs to get the salaries to a higher level to keep the talent at home, which in turn would bring in more fans (and more money).
Don Garber: Ultimately for MLS to be truly successful we need the best American players in our league. Today we have two issues: The first is financial, and the second is from an actual player-development perspective. Over time I believe both these areas can be addressed.
Q: Does MLS have any plans on addressing ties during the regular season? There's nothing more dissatisfying (other than a loss, I suppose) than leaving a game with a 0-0 tie.
Garber: I believe MLS needs to be an authentic soccer league playing by the rules established by FIFA. Ties are a part of the game from the youth level through World Cup competition. So I don't see a change to our system.
Q: What did you think about the first year of the Sounders?
Garber: The success of the Sounders has been remarkable. Most importantly, it proves that pro soccer can be culturally relevant and really important in any community.
Q: What is MLS doing to help bring the World Cup to the U.S.?
Garber: I can't imagine a better place for FIFA's World Cup. Last week in New York, over 20 cities — including Seattle — made presentations outlining their bid to be a local host city. I believe Seattle would be a terrific host city.
