Columbus Crew 3, New York Red Bulls 1
In the first appearance for both clubs in a Cup final, coach Sigi Schmid's Crew, the best team in MLS during the regular season, rolled past upstart New York, with the Crew's Guillermo Barros Schelotto named Most Valuable Player, thanks to a Cup final record three assists.
Alejandro Moreno opened the scoring for Columbus in the 31st minute before New York tied it. Not two minutes afterward, however, the Crew's Chad Marshall headed in a Schelotto corner kick in the 53rd minute, which proved to be the difference.
Frankie Hejduk completed a grand afternoon for the Crew with his 82nd-minute goal, as 27,000 witnessed the championship celebration. Brad Evans, who would become a Sounders FC player just a few days later in the MLS expansion draft, was in the starting lineup for Columbus, and Schmid would become Seattle's first coach less than a month after winning the title.
