Houston Dynamo 1, New England Revolution 1 (Dynamo win 4-3 on penalty kicks)
For the first time in Cup final history, the match went to penalty kicks, and the Dynamo (formerly the San Jose Earthquakes) outscored the Revolution before a partisan crowd of 22,427 in the Dynamo's home state.
The victory was dramatic, as the Revs broke a scoreless draw in the 113th minute (during added time) with a goal by Taylor Twellman. But Houston's Brian Ching — who knocked Sounders FC out of the playoffs this year — headed in a cross about a minute later, and time expired to bring about penalty kicks.
Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis actually came out of the net to take a penalty, and he converted to make it 3-2 for New England. But Ching drove his shot home, followed by teammate Dwayne De Rosario for the lead, and Dynamo keeper Pat Onstad saved Jay Heaps' attempt to set off the Dynamo celebration. Ching was named Most Valuable Player.
