MLS Cup History | Fourth time is the charm for L.A. Galaxy in 2002
Seattle will host the 14th MLS Cup on Sunday, at Qwest Field. This is the seventh in a series of stories about the first 13 MLS Cups.
Oct. 20, 2002
Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
Los Angeles Galaxy 1, New England Revolution 0
The Galaxy, winless in its previous three MLS Cup final appearances, finally got to hoist the trophy with Carlos Ruiz's extra-time golden goal in the 113th minute of the match, which made him match Most Valuable Player.
It also marked the first MLS title for current Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid, whose lineup featured 2009 Sounders Tyrone Marshall, assistant coach Ezra Hendrickson and Peter Vagenas, who came on as a substitute in the 61st minute.
The match featured an MLS Cup record crowd of 61,316, which saw the longest final in Cup history. The Revs were on the losing end in their own stadium. Marshall was credited with an assist on the game-winning goal.
