MLS Cup History | Expansion Fire dethrones D.C. United
Seattle will host the 14th MLS Cup, Nov. 22 at Qwest Field. This is the third in a series of stories about the first 13 MLS Cups.

D.C. United sought a threepeat, but the expansion Chicago Fire upstaged the Beltway Boys before 51,350 at the Rose Bowl. Peter Nowak, a Fire legend who assisted on both goals, was named Most Valuable Player of the game.
Goalkeeper Zach Thornton, the 2009 Comeback Player of the Year with Chivas USA, made eight saves for the Fire. Chicago's defense stymied D.C.'s attack, led by Chris Armas shadowing United scoring threat Marco Etcheverry.
D.C. outshot the Fire 22-10 but never could find the net.
