D.C. United won the first Major League Soccer championship on a goal in sudden-death overtime by Eddie Pope in the 94th minute. D.C. rallied from a 2-0 deficit with all three of its goals after the 72nd minute of the match.
The temperature was 44 degrees with rain and the crowd of 34,643 watched United legend Marco Etcheverry assist on a goal by Tony Sanneh in the 73rd minute and on Pope's goal. Shawn Medved scored D.C.'s second goal in the 81st minute.
Pope, who would become a mainstay on the U.S. national team in the years to follow, celebrated his game-winning header with a slide on his stomach into a deluge of water and mud.
