Freddie Ljungberg named MLS Player of the Month; Sounders match sold out
Seattle midfielder named MLS's top player for October. Sounders FC playoff match Thursday night against Houston is sold out.
One of the heroes in Sounders FC's late-season surge was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Month for October.
Midfielder Freddie Ljungberg recorded four assists while leading Seattle to a 3-0-0 record this month and a berth in the 2009 MLS Cup playoffs.
Seattle, which opens the playoffs at Qwest Field on Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Houston Dynamo, rallied for nine points in October to finish as the third seed in the Western Conference bracket.
Ljungberg is the first Swedish player to win MLS Player of the Month.
Ljungberg assisted on the winning goal by Nate Jaqua in a 3-2 victory at Kansas City on Oct. 17. He assisted on both second-half goals Saturday in a 2-1 victory over FC Dallas, by Jaqua (with Fredy Montero) and by Brad Evans in the 85th minute.
Seattle finished the regular season 12-7-11 with 47 points.
Ljungberg finished the regular season with two goals and nine assists and has an assist in each of the three meetings this season between Seattle and Houston.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Month is selected by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
Sounders game sold out
Sounders FC's playoff game Thursday night against Houston at Qwest Field is a sellout, the club announced.
Sounders FC opened 3,000 additional seats Saturday. Tickets distributed for the match will be approximately 35,700. Seattle set an all-time match attendance record for league play Saturday in its final MLs game at 33,108.
