Crew coach Schmid visits with Sounders FC

Sigi Schmid, the former Columbus Crew coach who many observers feel is primed to become Sounders FC's first head coach, is in town to meet with club executives.

RENTON — Seattle Sounders FC's interest in Sigi Schmid as a candidate for the team's first head coach intensified Thursday, with Schmid's appearance at Seahawks headquarters.

Schmid and general manager Adrian Hanauer met Thursday and are expected to continue the discussion about the job today. Schmid, who coached the Columbus Crew to the 2008 MLS championship, is no longer with Columbus after his contract expired Sunday. This is his first in-person meeting with Sounders FC executives in the Seattle area.

Schmid met Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren after Seahawks practice and was present as Freddie Ljungberg, Sounders FC's designated player, exchanged jerseys with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Ljungberg also met Seahawks Lofa Tatupu, Julian Peterson, Bobby Engram, Olindo Mare and Holmgren. He was in town for the unveiling of the Sounders FC uniforms Thursday night.

Schmid, 55, coached the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer from 1999 to 2004. He's guided the Crew the past three seasons, and has been head coach of the U.S. under-20 national team as well as at UCLA from 1980 to 1999.

Schmid has familiarity with several Sounders FC players chosen in the expansion draft last week, including former Crew midfielder Brad Evans, who played for Schmid this past season. Schmid also coached Sounders FC technical director Chris Henderson at UCLA.

That makes two confirmed coaching candidates on Hanauer's shortlist, Schmid and former USL Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer.

Sounders FC is also in contract discussions with defender Jeff Parke, who is the only expansion draft player not signed. Parke, formerly with the New York Red Bulls, was also at Seahawks headquarters Thursday.
