COLUMBUS, Ohio — Alejandro Moreno scored his career-best ninth goal of the season and the Columbus Crew beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 in David Beckham's Crew Stadium debut Saturday night.

Columbus (16-6-5) solidified its hold on first place in the Eastern Conference. It has an MLS-best 53 points, with eight wins in its last 10 games.

Los Angeles (7-12-8) has the fewest points in MLS.

Moreno stepped around his defender inside the penalty area and headed a long crossing pass from Danny O'Rourke past goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 43rd minute.

Two minutes later, the Galaxy failed to convert on its best scoring opportunity of the night when Landon Donovan's shot from a tight angle beat goalkeeper William Hesmer but slipped inches past the right post and out of play.

Chivas 3, at D.C. United 0

Alecko Eskandarian had a goal and an assist for Chivas.

Chivas (11-10-6) entered the game four points behind the Houston Dynamo for first place in the Western Conference. The Dynamo played Colorado later Saturday.

D.C. United (10-14-3) is winless in six games and a point out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Toronto FC 3, at Red Bulls 1

Chad Barrett scored two goals to lift Toronto FC.

Abdus Ibrahim also scored for Toronto (8-12-7), while Dane Richards had the lone goal for New York (9-10-8).

At Revolution 2, R. Salt Lake 2

Steve Ralston and Taylor Twellman each scored a goal in a 2-minute stretch to help the Revolution salvage a tie with Real Salt Lake.

• In the Premier League, Wayne Rooney scored one goal and set up another for Manchester United in a 2-0 victory at Blackburn that moved the Red Devils closer to the leaders.
