FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Landon Donovan scored twice for the Los Angeles Galaxy, but Shalrie Joseph's first goal of the season helped the New England Revolution salvage a 2-2 tie in a Major League Soccer match Saturday night.
Joseph's goal in the 71st minute helped New England (11-6-5) extend the Galaxy's winless streak to 10 (0-5-5). The Revolution is unbeaten in its last nine matches (7-0-2) against Los Angeles, which brought superstar David Beckham to New England for the first time.
Joseph, New England's All-Star midfielder, took a pass from Michael Parkhurst and beat defenders Eddie Lewis and Sean Franklin before unleashing a low drive past Galaxy reserve goalkeeper Josh Wicks.
Taylor Twellman gave New England a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute with his fifth goal in eight matches this season.
Notes
• Guillermo Barros Schelotto had two assists, giving him an MLS-leading 16 on the season, to lead Columbus past host FC Dallas 2-1. The Crew leads MLS with 40 points, two more than New England.
Alejandro Moreno and Eddie Gaven scored for Columbus.
• In other MLS matches, Darren Huckerby scored in the 84th minute to give host San Jose a 2-1 victory over Kansas City; Atiba Harris scored in extra time to give host Chivas USA a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC; and visiting New York and D.C. United played to a scoreless draw.
• Arsenal defeated Newcastle 3-0 behind two first-half goals from Robin Van Persie, emphatically bouncing back from last weekend's surprise loss to Fulham in the English Premier League.
Denilson added the third goal as Arsenal produced an attacking clinic at Emirates Stadium.
• Defending champion Inter Milan managed a 1-1 draw against Sampdoria on the opening day of the Italian league season, spoiling Inter manager Jose Mourinho's Serie A debut.
