VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Roger Levesque scored two second-half goals as the Seattle Sounders swept both games of their first road trip of the season by defeating the Virginia Beach Mariners 2-1 last night before 1,061 at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
On Friday, the Sounders (4-1-2) beat the Richmond Kickers 2-0.
Last night in the 47th minute, C.J. Klaas passed the ball to Levesque, who split the last two Virginia Beach defenders and drew out goalkeeper Matt Nelson. Levesque then slid the ball past Nelson at the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Klaas was ejected in the 58th minute after retaliating for a hard foul against him.
In the 73rd minute, Franklin Chacon passed the ball ahead to Levesque, whose initial shot from 12 yards was knocked down by Nelson. But Nelson could not control the rebound, and Levesque followed up with his second goal of the game.
Virginia Beach (1-8-4) finally ended Preston Burpo's shutout streak when Warren Ukah scored in stoppage time. Burpo's shutout streak went 540 minutes.
